How to start live classes online: a teacher's guide
Everything you need to go from classroom to live online batches: the minimum equipment, a reliable setup, and the habits that keep students coming back.
1. The minimum equipment
- Laptop or desktop with Chrome or Edge. Any machine from the last five years works.
- Pen tablet to write like on a board. An entry-level USB tablet is enough.
- Microphone: a clip-on (lavalier) mic is the single biggest upgrade. Students forgive video, not bad audio.
- Light: face a window or a simple LED light. Avoid a bright window behind you.
2. Internet
For HD teaching, aim for a stable 5 Mbps upload. Use a wired connection or sit close to the router, and keep a phone hotspot as a backup. On SuperMeet, video adapts to each student's connection, so students on weak mobile data still get audio and the board.
3. Choose a platform built for teaching
Meeting apps work for a start, but you'll want a teaching board, automatic recordings, attendance and no time limits. See the best live class apps in India.
4. Prepare your board
Export your notes or question sheets as PDFs. In TeacherZone you write over them live and add blank pages for rough work, which is cleaner than switching between apps on a shared screen.
5. Run the class
- Start 5 minutes early and use a waiting room.
- Keep your camera in a corner while you write, and go full camera for explanations.
- Ask a poll question every 15–20 minutes.
- Take doubts at fixed points, bringing students on stage.
6. After class
Share the recording in your course and check attendance. Students who left early may need a follow-up.
7. Price your batch
Know your cost per class. On SuperMeet, a one-hour class for 100 students costs ₹70 plus GST, recording included. Even a modest fee per student covers it many times over. See pricing.
